Purim is the Feast of Lots, a joyous Jewish festival commemorating the survival of the Jews who, in the 5th century BCE, were marked for death by their Persian rulers.
However, Purim is also the festival of masks and fancy dress. Dressing up in costumes is supposed to break down barriers between people, creating camaraderie and friendship. It is said that this is the power of clowning, which can turn enemies into friends.
